While stationed in New Mexico in the 1990's, Duane was taught about the traditional Southwestern Native American sand art from a Navajo co-worker. He has since taken "sand painting," as it's commonly referred, to the next level and features a wide variety of subjects. Trying to stay in line with the origins of this art-form, Duane often features animals indigenous peoples from around the globe revere within their respective cultures. Each painting is also imbued with something significant in regards to that particular animal and native traditions, and Duane's more recent pieces are enhanced with genuine gemstones. Some portions of the painting extend out a couple of inches from the board, giving the piece quite a bit of dimension! His most popular have been American Flags with Bald Eagles, military aircraft, and such. But, he has also done portraits, landscapes, and more.

Duane always had a knack for drawing and doodling his whole life. But in the early 1980s, he was prompted to take an art class in which he learned about oil and acrylic painting. His first ever painting, titled "RO's Barn" shocked his instructor and family, as he took to oils like a fish to water! Duane has done over 500 oil paintings since then! Genres include land-, sea-, and space-scapes, architecture, animals, portraits, nudes, florals, and still life. His canvases have ranged in size from wall murals to 8x10" miniatures. In fact his miniatures are one of his signatures! A finished miniature comes framed with glass.

While stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, Duane had the opportunity to learn Lampworking (or hot-torch glass sculpting) from Russ Gilbert, who at the time was working his trade in Panama City Beach. Duane would walk the sugar-white beaches of Panama City to find driftwood and seashells, which he could then incorporate into his lampwork sculptures. Duane's most requested sculptures have been names, animals, roses, and necklace pendants.

On occasion Duane has dabbled with pencil and colored pencil. His favorite subject to do in colored pencil is Portraits.
While his favorite subject is Architectural Designs, like this one, Duane has also done military aircraft and a few Caricatures.
Duane's glass and mirror etching has turned ordinary pieces into works of art! He also specializes in "Love Cups," which come from the old wedding tradition where the groom and bride drink from the same glass in symbolism of their new unity.
Being a "Jack of All Trades," Duane has extended his artistic skills to woodworking. Working and living in military areas, there's always a need for award or ceremonial presentations, and Duane has done a number of plaques and even a few shadow boxes. He tries to make each individual item unique to the individual receiving it!
Duane is never one to limit himself. Regarding several the the mediums above, he's stretched his talent onto some not-so-traditional canvases. Walls, dining tables, gun safes, helmets, motorcycles, mirrors, glassware, saws, and wooden slabs are just a few he's worked on!
